So, I started to understand these other kind of oppressions and to develop all the techniques to help those people, like:

The Rainbow of Desire (when you have a strong desire, but it`s not very simple. For example: you love, but you also hate and fear. So, we decompose all these feelings, change them into images and work with them),

Le flic dans la tête (A Cop in the Head: you want to do something, no one prohibits you, but you prohibit yourself), and others. We change these techniques into theatrical ones and do what we call the spect-actors: we improvise one scene, and people participate.

Then, we take the particularities and modify into a generality. In the technique The Rainbow of Desire, what matters is subjectivity. The Forum Theatre, for example, is just the opposite: it`s worried about objectivity.

TNM: The Rainbow of Desire (the book) was published in other countries? Boal: Yes. Seven years ago, in French. After some time, I published the English version (2 years ago). Then we had the Italian version and now the Portuguese one. The Portuguese is the translation of the English version, so it`s more up to date. I will publish, now, a new book called Legislative Theatre, to tell all my experience with politics and theatre together. And the first version will have a lot of holes with questions for the reader to tell what what he/she thinks.

„Don`t call your work Theatre of the Oppressed if it is not“!

THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED

TNM: You discovered different kinds of opression all over the world. But are the reactions to the Theatre of the Oppressed also different? Boal: The oppressions are different in each form, but they exist in almost all the places. For example: the racial opression exists in Germany against the Turkish, in France it`s against the Arabic, in Sweden against the Greeks, in Finland against the Italians. Racism, poverty and opression against women you see all over the world.

Basically, The Theatre of the Oppressed is a liberation for the spectators. At the moment that they understand that they can act, but they are not obligated to do so, they become very happy. This is already a broken rule, cause in theatre, you generally sit down and stay quiet, don`t participate. It`s like a lay person that prays the mass in the place of the priest. God would certainly accept a wrong mass.

When someone discovers that he/she can do whatever another person does, the reaction is always very good. At this moment, we notice how we are educated in an authoritarian way: „don`t do this, don`t do that, you`re too young, too old, you`re a man, you`re a woman“. So, when people CAN do, the reactions are very positive and emotional.

At this moment, Boal tells the history of a recent work in Hong Kong

and gets really emotioned. The history was about a Japanese family, that begins to have trouble when the older son (the one that maintains the others) buys a computer. The house is very small and there`s no space for the machine, except for a little table where his sister`s books are. The computer takes her space, and she doesn`t know where she could put her books. So, at the last scene, she goes outside the house and starts to throw the books - that, in reality, were part of her - away. She returns, stays quiet at some place, and the brother says: „ Now we are in peace“).

TNM: Do you have control through all the movement of The Theatre of the Oppressed? Boal: No, I don`t. It was a seed that I throw, and that is germinating all over the world. I don`t know about the quality of all the groups. I know that there are excellent ones. When the Festival of Theatre of the Oppressed was in Rio, there were 12 foreign groups, and 12 Brazilian ones. We saw marvelous things - and this is estimulation, cause I learn a lot with the people that I taught - and weak things. I have some influence, because people are always inviting me to visit them and watch their work. Then, I can tell if the basis of the theatre is correct or not: it must help people to be totally artists/humans.

TNM: So, that means that there are lots of interpretations of Theatre of the Oppressed? Boal: There must be. But when they appears, we protest. We say: „Don`t call your work Theatre of the Oppressed if it is not“.

TNM: What happens in the Centers of the Oppressed?

Boal: There are centers that want to do theatre and community work. There are others that abolished theatre, like the British one, where there is one of the biggest models of the Theatre of the Oppressed, only showed for the community. There are also centers that are partially financed by the government (in France, Vancouver, Canada - and others) and there are the ones that don`t have this financial help at all. They are different from each other.

TNM: How do you see the projection of Brazilian theatre in foreign countries? Boal: The Theatre of the Oppressed is the most diffused theatre method in the world. But the other kinds of theatre, they are less diffused than they worth. There are lots of important things here, in Brazil, that are not spreaded. „Nelson Rodrigues“, for example, is well known, especially in Germany, but he has the merit to be much more known. I think that some spectacles and some playwrights made an extraordinary success in foreign countries, but much of the valuable things in Brazilian theatre doesn`t get to go „outside“. We have a small theatre in the Center of the Theatre of the Oppressed, in Paris, and one of our ideas is invite Brazilian groups to go there, act there.

TNM: Can you see tendencies in actual theatre?

Boal: There is one thing against the Brazilian Theatre: when I began in theatre, we had a subvention of the government for a hole year of cultural projects, that means, for a program. And we had companies. I worked with Gianfrancesco Guarnieri (Arena Theatre) for ten years and we had a group of actors that we knew from a long time. Nowadays, we have subvention for just one play.

When the play is over, everything is over. Each one takes a different „road“. This is the North American system. Adopting this system was the worse thing for Brazilian theatre, because we depend of the private companies to get money. These companies give the money that isn`t theirs: it is of the taxes, of the government. And they (the private companies) also decide what they want to be done in theatre - it is a kind of censure.

This situation occurs in other countries. Actually, it comes from Greece and its Mecenas: the rich man that chooses for which drama he is going to give his money. But when you give money, you establish conditions…

Wer Geld gibt, stellt Bedingungen …

TNM: What do think about theatre and technology? Boal: Well, I am fascinated with what you showed me today (TNM at Internet). I suddenly saw a photo that I took in India, four years ago, and companies that I`ve lost contact … It is amazing.

But the entrance of other kinds of media in theatre endirties it. I am not condemning this; I`ve already did it. I used slides, movies ( I put, once, a film of soldiers marching upside the actor that was singing a song against the war).

But it`s dangerous because you mix two different arts: people start to pay more attention to the image and not to the person. What I most love in theatre is the „person“, is this pure thing. I`ve already saw a volcano in scene, but it didn`t emotioned myself. It`s a Disneyland`s effect.

But in the play made by the Japanese (see question about the reactions of Theatre of the Oppressed), there were just people and chairs, and I cried.

TNM: What are your expectations about the next Festival (Canada, 1997)? Boal: If the organizers get the necessary means, it can so extraordinary as it was in Rio, that was very beautiful. And the most beautiful thing, indeed, was the „confrontation“ of cultures. I hope it will happen again.
